Miyako Odori is an annual dance theater show held in Gion Kobu Kabu Renjyo every spring. It began in 1872 as part of entertainment, when an expo was held in Kyoto.

It introduces Kyoto’s sightseeing spots, while people dance and sing Naga-Uta. On a very rare occasion, a group of Maiko Girls from Kyoto’s Gion Kobu would join in to dance together in identical kimono, and it is absolutely gorgeous.

They change the dance, music and art every year, and prepare for this event many months in advance before the arrival of spring.

Also, before the show, tea ceremonies are held on the second floor of the Gion Kobu Kabu Renjo, where a Geisha in a formal black dress with a family symbol offers tea, and a Maiko helps her.

Many visitors return every year to see this unique show with Geisha and Maiko performing together. It’s one of the famous events that you should see once in Kyoto.
